Submitting a proposal

1. Why should I submit a proposal to the Student Research Symposium?
Submitting a proposal to the Symposium allows you to gain experience presenting your own work at an academic conference as well as an opportunity to receive constructive feedback on your research ideas and works-in-progress. In addition, you’ll get to meet peers from the HGSE community engaged in exciting research.

2. Who submits to the Student Research Symposium?
The Symposium receives proposal submissions from currently enrolled HGSE students.

3. What is required of me to submit? And what is required on day of?
To submit to the Symposium, you only need to complete a basic form on the conference website (src.gse.harvard.edu), which asks you to briefly share an abstract of less than 250 words, which will be featured in the conference program.  You will also have the opportunity to include information related to your research context/literature review, research questions or problem statement, methods, findings/conclusions, and implications for the field. On the day of the symposium (April 5, 2021), presenters will be assigned a specific presentation slot. Roundtable presentation slots will be 90 minutes.

4. What support is there for writing my proposal?
You may contact the Symposium coordinator at HGSEStudentResearch2021@gmail.com with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your proposal. Poster presentation assistance is also available through the HGSE Communications Lab.

5. What support is there for strengthening my literature review?
Meet with a Research Librarian to review and update your literature review.

6. What kinds of research are presented at the Student Research Symposium?
The Symposium receives proposals on many different types of educational research. We accept proposals on any education topic utilizing either qualitative or quantitative methods. While some submitted research is on-going, other research is completed and has been presented previously.

7. What is the difference between a roundtable and poster presentation?
• A roundtable discussion allows presenters to share their original research but also get to engage in a conversation with audience members on a given topic related to the original research presented.

• A poster session allows presenters to share their research through a poster display. Poster presenters will share their research with attendees walking through the poster displays.

8. Can I submit and possibly present more than one proposal?
Absolutely! If you have more than one piece of research that you would like to share at the Symposium you may submit multiple individual proposals.

9. What kinds of feedback will I get on my proposal?
You will receive concrete individual feedback to help you strengthen and prepare for your presentation.  You will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly to reviewers.

10. What is the deadline for submitting a proposal?
Proposals for 2021 Student Research Symposium are due by midnight (EST) on February 28, 2021.

Attending Student Research Symposium

1. Why should I attend the Student Research Symposium?
By attending the Symposium, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about a variety of topics in educational research. You will also have the chance to interact with scholars of educational research from HGSE.

2. Who attends the Student Research Symposium?
Anyone who is a current student and is interested in educational research may attend the Symposium!

3. Where do I register to attend?
Registration is not required to attend the Symposium!

4. Do I have to preregister for specific sessions at the conference?
No, you do not need to preregister for specific sessions. You may choose whichever sessions seem of most interest to you after reading through the program.
